Similan Islands
The Similan Islands are known for their beauty and the great variety in marine life, from the small to the big, from nudibranches, seamoths and shrimp to seaturtles, eaglerays and mantarays.
Something that becomes obvious after just a couple of dives at the Similan Islands: the big difference between the Eastcoast and the Westcoast of the Similans. The coast in the East has beautiful protected beaches and bays, the Westcoast has crude coastlines with enormous, impressive granite boulders. This translates to the underwater environment: on the Eastside beautiful coral reefs, seldom a real strong current, lots of reeffish and hunting fish, on the Westside big boulders with fan corals, sometimes strong currents, reeffish and a good chance of bigger marinelife like several shark and ray species.
Places like Elephant Head, Shark Fin Reef, Boulder City, East of Eden, Three Trees, Deep Six are some of the divesites here, and also Koh Bon (just to the North of the Similan Islands) has to be mentioned because of the good chance of seeing manta rays here in the right season. Every location has its own, unique characteristics, but they all form part of the magical island group the Similan Islands.
The islands offer shelter and protection, which can be very nice on both an overnight- and a daytrip. The visibility here can be more than 40 meters, but will often be around 25 meters, sometimes a little less. In November and December the visibility is usually at its best, later on in the season the amount of plankton in the water increases. With that the visibility decreases but the chances of special encounters with manta rays and whale sharks increase. At the Similans it is very well possible to have wonderful, shallow dives, especially on the East Coast. The Similans are located about two hours sailing (speedboat) from Tap Lamu, which is about 1 hour 30 minutes by minibus from Phuket. You can do daytrips to the Similans and Koh Bon while staying in either Phuket or Khao Lak.
5,400 - 6,200 Baht for 2 dives (every day of the week),
All prices including national park fees.
Diving at Similans is possible from November till April.
At our other websites, Phuket dash Scuba dot Com and divingsimilans.eu you will find a complete description of diving at the Similan Islands.
We hope to see you diving soon at Koh Similans in Phuket Thailand. These divesites can also be dived on a overnight trip or liveaboard (diving safari).
